Owing tax has nothing to do with whether you are filing for the first time. It has to do with whether you had enough tax withheld from your paychecks. if you did not have enough withheld then it is possible for you to owe the IRS and/or your state.
We do not know what you mean by a "normal job." Do you have a W-2 that shows federal and state tax withheld in boxes 2 and 17? Or did you receive a 1099Misc from which no tax was withheld?
Are you someone else's dependent? Have you checked all of the amounts you entered to make sure they were entered correctly?
Yes, this can be normal. The amount of tax you owe on your return depends on the amount of tax you had withheld. If you did not have enough tax withheld during the year, then you must pay the difference in tax liability at the end of the year. You should file a new W-4 withholding form so that you can have more tax withheld during the year. This will help you manage the amount you will owe or refund you will receive on your 2020 return. Please follwo the directions below to complete a new W-4 form.
If you haven't filed your 2019 return yet, use the power of TurboTax to generate a new W-4 form. The W-4 calculations in your program are up to date with current tax rates.
Already filed your 2019 return? Use our online W-4 Withholding Calculator at TurboTax.com instead.
