It's cheaper to pay up front.  There is an additional fee to have it taken out of your return.

It is much cheaper to pay through Turbo Tax than to have it taken out of your refund. There is an extra cost of $34.99 to have it taken out of your refund.

Honestly it depends upon three factors. How much you are getting in return, whether or not you choose the max protection option, and is it going to be a hindrance for you to pay up front? I chose to take it out and I feel that is the better option but it's all dependent upon whether you want to save money now or later.
