is it better to file your state tax return filing jointly or seperate even if you file federal tax as jointly? State is Mass. Only one of us works in that state.

If you are nonresidents, there is probably no advantage either way- although if you file separate returns, you will have to create the "mock" federal return to complete the Mass state return (which of course disqualifies you from e-filing so there is a delay if you have a refund.)  See How do I prepare a joint federal return and separate states?
