Is it absolutely necessary to give turbotax the username and password for my investment accounts, which I am reluctant to do?

Your financial institution is requiring our software to prompt for your user id and password as a security measure.  It is only required for importing, but you can always scroll down that page and select "I'll type it in myself."  No id and password is needed when entering manually.
