The deadline for tax filing (for both Fed and California state) is 10/16. Is it automatically extended for free w/o the need to file an extension? I did not file an extension, what happened and what should I do. I am ready to efile now.

Yes you are correct.. CA residents residing in specific counties mentioned in the link above will have automatic extension until Oct. 16thto file returns & pay taxes. You did not have to file the extension form on April 18th.
If you have completed the 2022 return, you can e-file them.
