I see that in previous years this was not possible. 2023 looks and feels different due to having to login to Intuit/TurboTax as part of the activation process. I think somewhere in the installation/activation process I was asked whether I wanted to activate another license key. But I am at a loss as to how to proceed. I have three copies that I want to use for various family members and could load on three computers but would rather not.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry you can only have 1 program installed for each year on the same computer. Why do you need more? Did you buy 3 copies? You only need 1. All the Desktop programs can do unlimited returns and efile 5. And All the Desktop programs have the same forms. You just get more help and guidance in the higher versions. So you could use Deluxe for all. You can install Turbo Tax on 5 computers you own.
And each return is saved in a separate data file so you won't mix them up or overwrite them.
I am doing taxes for multiple family members and each can get a free copy or a very cheap copy through a financial institution where they hold substantial assets. Said copies each comes with a free state download. If I use one copy and buy two states the cost would be $40 times 2 or $80. So I can save about $80 by using three copies. So that is the motivation.
Sorry you can't get another free state that way. The only way would be to install on another computer. So they all need different states?
Right, three states are needed. So I guess I will be dragging out old computers to put them to use.
What!!!! Please explain... I've been using Turbo Tax for about 20 years and year after year, I've always just left the previous year's version in my Applications folder and then downloaded and installed the current year's version... My previous Mac computer had at least six versions of Turbo Tax (Deluxe or Premier depending on year)... My current Mac computer has both 2021 TT Premier and 2022 TT Premier sitting in my Applications folder... I am soon (maybe!!!???) to buy 2023 TT likely Deluxe for this year... What are you saying, that those previous versions need to be removed???? Never heard of that and never had to do that before???? I sometimes have a reason to open and use the last years' version...
And please say more about the need to use my Intuit login credentials to even install this year's (2023) version???? Why is Intuit requiring that??? I have the account... I'm on it right now... But I question what Intuit's motive might be for requiring this???
Please respond... Can I have older versions just sitting in my Applications folder like I've done for 20 years now??? And why the need to log in to install this new 2023 software???
Whoa, don't get excited. The original question was if they could have more than 1 program installed for the SAME YEAR. You can have all the previous years still installed. I do.
Got it... thanks... Yes, I read the original question wrong... Relieved just because it's always been that you could have older copies and like I said, sometimes I use the previous year for estimates and also to all TT to bring forward information from last year's application... Thanks...
Now, for the 2nd question about say more about why we need to use the same credentials I use to log on to this site to install TT Deluxe for the current year (2023) on our Mac computer??? Or if you wish I will make this a new, separate post??? thanks much...
I guess one reason is to tie your activation code to your account. This FAQ explains more,
Thanks VolvoGirl... Very helpful FAQ... Much appreciated...
There was an error in a previous reply. "And All the Desktop programs have the same forms." is not correct. There are different forms in each version. Basic I think does not figure itemized deductions, Deluxe no longer contains all the forms you need to report some investment income (it used to until about 3 years ago), Premiere can do all the investment forms but still cannot do what the Business version can. See the link below and check what forms come with each version at the bottom of the page.
@mikez3893 Did you scroll down the page on that website and click on View Forms under any of the desktop editions listed? If you do you will notice that every desktop edition has the same forms and schedules.
The view forms at the bottom of each version does currently point to the exact same web page so I'm guessing the website is mess up this year. We were forced to upgrade from Deluxe to Premier a few years ago becausea particular form needed for some investment income was no longer in Deluxe. This was after calling tech support. At the time I made pdfs both the Deluxe and the Premier and compared them. There were more forms in Premier, including the one we needed that year. I will call Intuit before buying Premier this year but I doubt they decided to include all the forms in the basic version.
@mikez3893 When entering investment income using the Deluxe desktop edition, the program will recommend the Premier edition which has a little more help and guidance for investments. However, this only a Recommendation it is NOT a Requirement.
I found this old letter (long) from Intuit from 2013 I had saved explaining the confusion they caused when they first started removing forms from the Deluxe version. That year we used deluxe because we had no Schedule C. In 2020 there was a different form missing which cause us to get Premier. I definitely will check before buying this year.
To our valued TurboTax desktop customers,
We messed up. We made a change this year to TurboTax desktop software and we didn't do enough to communicate this change to you as proactively and broadly as we could or should have. I am very sorry for the anger and frustration we may have caused you.
Intuit has a long history of doing right by our customers, and in this instance, we did not live up to the standards of excellence you have come to expect from us. We did not handle this change in a manner that respected our loyal customers and we owe you an explanation of what we are doing to make it right.
The change we made to our desktop products, both the download and CD versions, includes removing Schedules C, D, E and F from TurboTax Deluxe, which some long-time customers had relied on to report business income, investment sales and rental property income. As a result, you may now be required to upgrade the version of TurboTax you use even though your tax situation hasn't changed from last year.
Here's why we made the change. Over the years, we have worked hard to make it easy for you to choose the TurboTax product that is right for you and your unique tax situation. We want that choice to be clear and confidence inspiring. However, as new online and mobile technologies emerged, our products, and the tax scope and features they included, began to differ, leading to customer confusion. These differences also impeded our ability to introduce new innovations across our entire product line.
So this year, we made the product experience consistent across all TurboTax offerings. This change enables us to innovate faster and make improvements that benefit all customers at the same time, regardless of whether they use our online or desktop software. You can be sure that we've preserved what's unique to our desktop product: the ability to e-file up to five returns, switch to forms mode and install the software on multiple computers.
But good intent must be matched with great execution, and that is where we let you down. We have heard from many of you that you were surprised when you discovered the change. No one likes this kind of a surprise, so we are taking immediate action to make things right and help you through this transition year.
We are giving $25 back if you purchased TurboTax Deluxe desktop software (CD or download) and filed your 2013 tax return and have to upgrade to TurboTax Premier or Home & Business to file your 2014 return. This will help you move to the right desktop product, while reducing the immediate and unexpected financial impact.
I deeply regret the anger and distress we have caused those of you affected by this change. Our customers are the heartbeat of every TurboTax employee. Our hope is that we can regain your trust and demonstrate that our commitment to you has never been stronger.
Sincerely,
Sasan Goodarzi and the TurboTax Team
General Manager, Intuit TurboTax
