IND-181-01 - The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for the first taxpayer on your return is missing

I don't have an IP PIN. We have always used 5 random numbers in the efile signature process - why is this getting rejected?

The IP PIN is a 6-digit Identity Protection PIN that's not entered in the FILE section, but in a different topic.  It's not the same as the random 5-digit electronic efiling PIN.  It sounds like the IRS has an IP PIN showing for you in its database.   If you didn't opt into the program, and didn't report ID theft to them, then how they happened to assign you one, I don't know.   If you have an online IRS account, you can look online and probably find it displayed there.   There are other ways, though slower, to get it.
