If you received e-file reject code IND-181-01, it's because your 2022 IP PIN was missing from your return.
To resolve this, start by finding your 6-digit IP PIN:
- This will be on the CP01A letter you received in December or January for your 2022 taxes. PINs for prior tax years won't work
- If you lost your letter or never received one, retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS website
- If you're unable to retrieve your IP PIN online, you can have it reissued (allow up to 21 days)
Once you have retrieved your PIN, select your version of TurboTax below for instructions:
TurboTax Online
- Sign in to your TurboTax account
- Select the Fix my return
- On the screen Let's fix your returns and then refile, select Fix it now
- Enter your IP PIN in the field provided and select Continue
- If you're unable to find your IP PIN, select I can't find my IP PIN and call the listed IRS number. You can also select File by Mail if you can't get a new PIN
- Confirm your IP PIN and cross-check that the Identity Protection PIN on your screen matches
- Select This is my assigned IP PIN
- Then, select Continue to refile to e-file your return again
TurboTax CD/Download
- Sign in to your CD or desktop TurboTax account
- Select Fix my return
- Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your 2022 IP PIN to re-file your return
TurboTax Mobile App
- Sign out of the TurboTax Mobile app by selecting the menu icon, then Sign Out
- Open your browser (either on your device or a computer) and sign in at MyTurboTax.com (use your app sign-in credentials)
- Fix and refile your return in TurboTax Online using the TurboTax Online instructions listed above
Note: Because your IP PIN is issued by the IRS, for your protection, TurboTax does not have access to it.
