How do I fix e-file reject IND-181-01?

If you received e-file reject code IND-181-01, it's because this year's IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) was missing from your return. The IRS provides participants a new IP PIN for each tax year.

An IP PIN and a Self-Select PIN are two different things.

  • An IP PIN is a 6-digit number that the IRS gives taxpayers who were victims of tax-related identity theft. Someone can also self-register to receive an IP PIN.

  • A Self-Select PIN is a random 5-digit number that you enter as your electronic signature when e-filing your return.

To resolve this, start by finding your 6-digit IP PIN:

  • This will be on the CP01A letter you received in December or January for your 2025 taxes. PINs for prior tax years won't work

  • If you lost your letter or never received one, retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS website

  • If you're unable to retrieve your IP PIN online, you can have it reissued (allow up to 21 days)

Once you have retrieved your PIN, select your version of TurboTax below for instructions:

TurboTax Online

  • On the Add any Identity Protection PINs screen, select Add or Edit.

  • On the Add any Identity Protection PINs screen, enter the IP PIN and select Save.

  • On the Review your Identity Protection PIN info screen, select Continue.

  • Select File in the menu.

  • On the Welcome back screen, select Continue.

    • Don't select Fix my return.

  • Select Start next to Step 3 to refile your return.

  • Open TurboTax Desktop.

  • Select Fix my return.

  • Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your 2025 IP PIN to re-file your return.

  • Open your browser (either on your device or a computer) and sign in at MyTurboTax.com (use your app sign-in credentials).

  • Fix and refile your return in TurboTax Online using the TurboTax Online instructions listed above.
