income lower than Standard deduction and still paying taxes

My income is less than standard deduction yet I am still due to pay taxes. Is this refunded? I'm not clear how this works.

What kind of income did you enter?  If you entered W-2 income you do not pay tax if you had less than the standard deduction amount.  But if you entered self-employment income of even $400, you have to pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.  That is not the same as ordinary income tax, and is not subject to the standard deduction amount.

Thanks for clarifying. Yes, it was self-employment income so that explains it. Much appreciated.
