If you move, in the new state, you report income earned while you are resident of the new state, i.e. paychecks related to work performed in the new state.
can you please clarify the answer?
if you were a resident of two states, i thought you are to fill out the state you left first as a non-resident or part year resident (depending on how that state works).
then I thought you fill out the state you are living in as a resident; there should be a credit for the tax paid to the first state, ensuring you don't pay taxes on the same dollar twice. Normally you'd input the entire years' earning for both states but then the credit ensures no double taxation.
turbo tax is going to ask what date you moved / changed residences and it will figure it all out.
Again, each state is a little different but isn't that the basic concept?
which two states are we dealing with?
I have basically the same question, and I'll be as specific as possible.
I moved from Georgia to Tennessee this year. Tennessee has no state income tax. I moved on May 1st. My company pays April commissions on May 31st. Should they have withheld Georgia state taxes from my May 31st commission check? They did, and their logic was that the work was performed in April. However, it's my understanding that you are taxed based on when the paycheck hits, not when the work was performed.
Do you know the answer?
