If you are filing as married filing separate and using TurboTax Online, you will need to create your wife's return in a separate TurboTax account as only one tax return can be created per TurboTax ID. (You can link more than one TurboTax ID to the same e-mail, though.) Note that in the CD/Download versions of TurboTax, you can create and file more than one return with the one software purchase.
If you are filing a joint return, then you will add your wife's income in the sections of TurboTax for which she received income. For example, if she received a W-2, then you will enter her W-2 in the W-2 entry section. If she received 1099 INT or DIV or MISC income, then you will enter her income in those sections as well. There will not be separate sections for your income and for her income.
To see whether you have specified you are filing a joint return, take the following steps:
- In you are not already in your TurboTax file, select Take me to my return:
- Select My Info from the left hand side of the screen.
- Scroll down to Filing Status -- you should see Married Filing Joint. Select EDIT to change. See sample screenshot below.
