If my name on my social security card is spelled with a K and my birth certificate with a C would my tax return be rejected?

My social has my name spelled with a K and I have my mother and fathers last name but my birth certificate has it spelled with a C and I only have my fathers last name. My I.d has my name as spelled on my birth certificate but my tax return has my name as spelled on my social.

The IRS checks the Social Security database to confirm your personal data, so you will want to use your name as it is shown on your Social Security card.  Otherwise, your return will be rejected.

If the name on your Social Security card is incorrect, you should contact Social Security to have it changed.

This would be my first time filing for taxes, would the irs ask for documentation proving that is my social?

I have never known them to ask for proof, unless you are audited.

Not true. My husband's social security card has been wrong since he got the card as a child. I don't know why his mom didn't correct it, but never have had a problem. I'm finally making him correct it because if something happened to him and I applied for survivor's benefit, I want there to be zero problems OR if he applied for SS benefits at retirement dont' want there to be any issues.

The question was "Does the IRS ask for proof that this is your SS number?" As KittyM stated, so long as your name on your tax return matches the name on your Social Security card, then the IRS will have no reason to question your number. The IRS does not have access to your birth certificate.

@lofgrenb: As for the concern that a misspelled name on the Social Security card could cause problems with things like survivor benefits, that is not a question we can answer; please direct this question to the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Please note that once the name is updated on your new Social Security card, there will be a delay before the IRS is notified. For this reason, you may find it preferable to file your return this year (while the IRS and the SSA both have the old name), then apply to change the name with the SSA after your e-file has been accepted by the IRS.
