If I've already paid my estimated taxes but I want an extension how do that on turbo tax. It doesn't show "I've already paid my estimated taxes" as an option when it asked for my bank account and routing #s.

i want to file and extension and the instructions on turbo tax was to first go to this irs website pay my estimated taxes (same with state) and then go back through the turbo tax extension process but right near the end it started asking me for my bank routing and account numbers and how much i wanted to pay.  I'm confused because I just paid this direct and turbo tax doesn't show an option for bypassing this.  How do i proceed?

Mark the option to "mail check."  [You don't have to really mail a check since you've made the payment(s) online, but this will allow the extension to be e-filed.]

Be sure to go back into the returns and indicate that you made a payment with the extension.

To report the tax payment you made with your extension, please follow these steps:

  1. Click on Federal TaxesDeductions & Credits.  [In TT Self-Employed:  Personal > Deductions & Credits]
  2. In the Estimates and Other Taxes Paid section, click on the Start/Update box next to Other Income Taxes. [See Screenshot #1, below.]
  3. Click on the Yes box on the About other income taxes screen.
  4. On the next screen, click on the Start/Revisit box next to the type of tax payment (Federal, State, or Local extension).  [Screenshot #2]
  5. Enter your payment(s) on the next screen, Payment with Federal [State or Local] Extension for 2016.  [Screenshot #3]
