If I'm a resident alient, can i use turbotax?

Yes, you may as long as you have a valid Social Security Number or ITIN, and you have met the IRS requirements to file as a Resident, for tax purposes, with form 1040. The IRS requires you to pass one of two tests in order to be considered a Resident: 

  1. The Green Card Test
    You are a resident, for U.S. federal tax purposes, if you are a Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States at any time during the calendar year. This is known as the "green card" test.

  2. The Substantial Presence Test
    You will be considered a United States resident for tax purposes if you meet the substantial presence test for the calendar year. To meet this test, you must be physically present in the United States (U.S.) on at least:
    1. 31 days during the current year, and
    2. 183 days during the 3-year period that includes the current year and the 2 years immediately before that, counting:

If you do not meet these requirement you must file with form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ. TurboTax does not offer support for these tax forms, but it has partnered up with SprinTax to assist taxpayers who must file as Non-Residents. Please click on the link below for more information:
