I work for the United Nations as a US Citizen. I am not sure how to enter the salary I earned (self employed). I have a UN statement of taxable earnings for 2017.

According to IRS, U.S. citizens serving in the U.S. are also subject to self-employment tax on their UN earnings,  But not Green card holders, so I suppose I dont have to pay the self employment taxes and therefore not filling out the the 8819 S form. Am I missing anything?

To clarify, do you have an IRS sourced document that states that green card holders are exempt from filing an 8919?

The IRS says that If you are a green card holder working for a foreign government or international organization, you generally must report your earnings as wages but are not subject to self-employment taxes on those earnings and may not voluntarily pay self-employment tax on those earnings.

I also tried to filled out the 8819s form and its asking for the EIN number that United Nations doesnt have. It is impossible to fill out this form.

In your case the correct approach is to report your income as Other Wages, but not complete Form 8919.

This is how to do that in TurboTax:

  1. Select Federal on the left side menu.
  2. Select Income and Expenses toward upper left.
  3. Expand/ scroll down the list and find the section called, Less Common Income.
  4. Scroll all the way down and select Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C.
  5. Select Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099.
  6. Answer the first question Yes.
  7. Click Continue until you get to the page titled, Any Other Earned Income?
  8. Answer Yes and click Continue.
  9. Select Other and click Continue.
  10. Enter a description and amount on this page, click Done.

The income will show on line of Form 1040. It will be included in your taxable income, but you will not pay self-employment tax on it.

In the review, it shows that I have to fill out this form before filing taxes. Maybe there is something I am doing wrong.

As a follow-up to @JulieS, see if you can delete Form 8819 if you do not need to file it.  To delete a form, follow these steps:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  4. Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

Scroll to the bottom of the Wages and Income interview section and use the dropdown button to see Foreign International employer.  The interview will ask if you received a statement from the employer.  You will use that information to complete the interview and since it is wages, it will be reported on Line 1.  All the other information in this post applies.
