I was single as of 12/31/23. I provided 100% of the household income/expenses. I have a qualifying dependent. Why won’t Turbo Tax let me file Head of Household?

Did you indicate the dependent lived with you for the Whole Year?  Is the dependent related to you?

If you entered everything correctly the program would have given you the Head of Household filing status.

Try deleting the dependent and re-enter.

It would have to be the way you answered one of the questions.  Review who is a qualifying dependent with the information below.  Qualifications for a dependent are not the same as qualifications for filing head of household.

You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiancé(e), and so on as a dependent on your 2023 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child:

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative:

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $4,700 in 2023.
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.

Hello!  I filled out everything correctly, but it still wouldn’t let me change filing status.    I have tried to delete my dependent and renter, but it won’t let me do that!  It keeps filling in the info from last year’s return before I can do anything else.  Very frustrating.   In any case, thank you for your suggestion.

It depends if the person you are claiming is related to you or not.  If this person is not related, you will need to file single but you may claim this individual as an other dependent providing they live with you for the entire year.
