I was combat deployed in 2018, did not file, have an IRS extension until March. How did I use TurboTax to file to find my 2017 return and file my 2018 taxes?

To get to your 2017 tax return, you will need to log into your account and select Documents.  Please see this link for more information:  Accessing my Prior Year Tax Return

Here is a link to the prior-year software so you can file for 2018: Prior Year Software

Please note that 2018 tax returns will need to be printed and mailed, as IRS no longer accepts them as an e-file.

Thank you for your service.

Thanks for all that.  My real question was how to import an old return (2017) to do my 2018 versus having to hand-enter all the past information over again (especially depreciation schedules and property info).

In order to transfer your data, please follow these steps:

  1. Launch TurboTax 2018 and click Start a New Return (or go to File in the upper left corner and select New Tax Return).
    • Don't select Continue, as transferring is only available on new, empty returns.
  2. Click the Transfer Return button on the Good News! screen.
    • You can also click Browse and in the pop-up window, select All Files (*.*) from the drop-down at the bottom. Then, in the left pane, browse to wherever you stored your 2018 return and click Open.
