Are you enrolled as a full time student in an accredited institution of higher learning for the semester? You also have to be enrolled in a course of study as a full time student, that will lead to a degree or credentialed certification.

I’m enrolled in a state university full time (13 hours ) on a computer science degree plan.  So buying a gaming pc for class wouldn’t be an issue to be tax deducted?

If you meet the requirements to claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the computer is a requirement for the course of study, you can include the cost of the computer in the total amount of up to $4000 of qualified education expenses that can be used to claim up to $2500 of credit on your or your parent's tax return. The expense cannot be deducted directly on your tax return.
