I've earned money helping family and they were paying me with strictly cash. Do I need to report it? If I do, how would I report it on my tax return this year?

It was over 400 dollars worth of work.

Yes, you would report the cash earned on a Schedule C, which is used to report earnings from a side gig or business you may have. Since you will file a Schedule C, you are can deduct ordinary and necessary expenses that are related to earning that income.

Here's how to add your self-employment income:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Navigate to the Schedule C section:
  3. Answer Yes to Did you have any self-employment income or expenses?
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your Schedule C.

Here are the self-employed expenses you can deduct and where to enter them.
