It’s actually you can install the program on 5 computers you own. You can do unlimited returns and efile 5. You have to buy a new program each year. So why do you need to keep,d years installed? You can only amend for 3 years.
Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac).
But even if you have the CDs you won’t be able to reinstall 2020 or prior. They only support the last 3 years. And the License Code started in 2019. So 2019 needs to connect to Turbo Tax to verify the License Code. But they have stopped supporting 2019. So you can’t install and activate 2019 and newer when they stop supporting each year going forward.
And if you do get 2018 and prior installed you won’t be able to update it or download any state programs. So you should save all your returns to a pdf file with all the worksheets. Open each year and save them now if you haven’t already.
If you will be using the TurboTax desktop editions you receive 5 free federal e-files. After the 5 e-files have been used then all other tax returns have to be printed and mailed. You can create, complete and file as many tax returns with the TurboTax software as needed.
TurboTax will support the tax year of the software for 3 years from the due date of an extension request for that tax year. After the 3 years the software will no longer be supported so you will not be able to update or download any state software programs.
You can leave the TurboTax software installed on your personal computer for as long as you wish. For example, I have TurboTax software installed on my computer for each tax year from 2007 thru 2024.
The desktop TurboTax software for a particular year will last as long as your computer lasts. When you get a new computer, you will only be able to install the current year and three previous years on the new computer. You will not be able to install older years.
As VolvoGirl said, save your tax return as a PDF every year after you file it, so you will be able to refer to it if necessary.
