I took in a homeless person in September 2023. I provide him a room to sleep in and food. He has trouble finding and keeping a job.

In turn he feeds my cats and helps me occasionally with the yard.

That was kind and generous of you.  You have not asked a question.   If your question is whether you can claim him as a dependent-----only if he lived with you for the whole year and had less than $5050 of income not counting Social Security.

IRS interview to help determine who can be claimed:

https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/who-can-i-claim-as-a-dependent

You might be able to claim him as a qualifying relative for 2024 and get the $500 credit for other dependents.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $5050 in 2024 (not counting Social Security)
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.

for 2023 you can not claim him as a dependent because he's not relayed to you and did not live with you for the entire year.

if he lived with you for all of 2024 and had a gross income of $5050 or more or if you did not provide over 50% of his support. you can not claim him as a dependent

even if you can claim him for 2024, you can not claim head of household fil9ing status because he is not a blood relative.
