If you didn't receive a W-2, it's likely because you are considered self-employed (an independent contractor by the school). If you were paid less than $600 by any one entity, they are not required to issue a 1099-NEC, but you must report the income if it exceeds $400.
Self-Employment Income
- Open or continue your return.
- Navigate to the Schedule C section:
- TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to Schedule C or use magnifying glass to search for Schedule C and select the Jump to link.
- Answer Yes on the Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? screen.
- If you land on the Your 2024 self-employed work summary page, select Review next to the work you're adding income for.
- Answer the questions on the following screens until you arrive at Let's enter the income for your work.
- Select Other self-employed income and select Continue.
- On the next page you can enter any cash, personal checks, checks, credit card payments, or cryptocurrency (Form 1099-K) related to your self-employment.
