I received two 1099s for the same income -- one from a production company and one from my talent agent. How do I avoid paying double taxes on this money?

I am a television writer. I worked for a production company, and they paid me through my agents. I received two 1099s for the SAME INCOME, one from the production company and one from my agents. The IRS is saying I owe them on unreported income -- the income listed on the 1099 from the Production Company. How do I avoid paying double tax on the same income?

I would respond to the IRS with all of the information you have on the situation to help "prove" your case. I would go to your bank and obtain a copy of the deposited check, showing that you only received one.

I would also try to talk to both companies to see if one will issue a corrected Form 1099-MISC showing zero.

You can also try to work with the IRS' Taxpayer Advocate System. You can read more about that at this link here:
