I received a strange tax form that says 1099G at the top but does not look like a 1099G. Is this a form I need to enter?

The form says 1099G at the top. It is not from the state that paid out unemployment for me. It has two boxes, box 2 and 3. Box 2 says "State or Local Income Tax Refunds: $52.00". Box 3 says "Refund is for Tax Year: 2019". Underneath is an explanation that says "Box 2- Shows refunds, credits, or offsets of state or local income tax you received. If there is an entry in this box, it may be taxable to you if you deducted the tax paid as an itemized deduction on your federal income tax return. Even if you did not receive the amount show, for example, because it was credited to your estimated tax, it is still taxable if it was deducted. Any interest received on this amount must be included as interest income on your return. See the instructions for US Form 1040 or 1040A." I am not sure if this is something that needs to be reported on my 2020 taxes or not.

That is a State (or local ) tax refund 1099-G for a refund you supposedly received on your State or Local 2019 taxes...and it does not look like an unemployment 1099-G

IF you used the Std Deduction last year on your 2019 federal taxes...then it does not need to be entered.  (If you used the "Free" version last year, it would have been Std Ded, since Itemized Ded requires Deluxe or higher)

IF you used "Itemized" deductions on your Federal tax submission for 2019, then you do need to enter that $52.  The entry is on the menu page for Wages&Income....but the specific section is labelled as being for "Other Income",  then that expands and a specific line shows up for Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns

It depends. You need to enter the amount from the form as income if you itemized you deductions in 2019. Otherwise, don't enter that, it isn't taxable for you.  To enter it in TurboTax follow these steps:

  1. With your return open in TurboTax, search for 1099–G and then select the Jump to link at the top of your search results.
  2. This will take you to Did you have any of these types of income? Answer Yes.
  3. On the following screen, check the first box State or local income tax refunds and continue.
  4. Answer Yes to Did you get a state or local tax refund? and enter your information.

Thank you very much. I had an accountant do my taxes in 2019. I’m looking at the tax information now. In the “Deductions” section there is an amount in the box for “standard or other deductions”. There is also an amount in the line “total itemized or standard deductions”. But there is no amount in any of the other deductions options. Does this mean I don’t have to report it?

If the amount in the total Itemized or Standard deduction was $12,200 if you were singe, $18,350 for Head of Household or $24,400 for Married filing jointly, it means you took the Standard deduction and you don't need to include the state refund to your income in 2020. If there is a different amount, then you itemized your deduction last year and need to include that amount as income this year.
