I received a security alert. How do I know if it is legitimate?

I received a security alert that said someone else used my information to try to file a return under a different account. It provides a phone number for me to call. However, I can't tell if the email itself is legitimate, and I can't find the security alert on my account here on the website. I don't want to just call the number in the email. Is there a way to find details in my online account?
