I noticed my Virginia state tax amount owed is spread out over four payments. I didn’t ask for this but isn’t it due on May 1?

The 4 payments are 2019 Estimated tax forms....they are for next year's taxes, not the 2018 stuff you are filing now...so you still have to pay VA your full balance due some way.

The estimated tax forms are there in case you find you will be in an underpayment situation next year too, and since they are based on this year, may not actually be accurate….thus the word "Estimated"  .

They can be used if you think they will limit your underpayment next year...or ignored if you will be making other changes in your tax withholding to not get in an underpayment situation next year.

Thanks!  So will my payment be made through efile on May 1 as I thought then?

I paid for efile with a credit card......

I certainly have no idea what you did.

Paying for the software isn't paying your taxes... I don't know if you can arrange a VA balance due payment when you file, or whether it has to be arranged separately.

.....what you should do is to download your filing copy to a PDF file on your computer, and read the VA Electronic Filing Instructions near the beginning of your VA tax file, and see what it says about how your 2018 Payment to VA is going to occur...or whether you still have to arrange that payment separately.

IF your payment has been scheduled it will be stated, along with the scheduled payment date...on the Filing Instructions sheet

IF you still have to arrange it, then there will be directions on where to go to schedule it....but I would recommend you NOT schedule it for 1May....schedule it for a few days before.  Last second payments can go astray...you want it recorded as being paid  a few days earlier.
