Hello,
I've been using turbotax premier for past couple of years. last year i've got married and filling my tax jointly. she is overseas and doesn't have SSN or ITIN so i'm submitting the W-7 with tax return at the same time. question that i have is on supporting documents, it is confusing of what exactly needed. if i just attach a copy of her passport that's enough? or do i need to attach more documents?
I also not sure what this paragraph means from the instruction:
"You must submit documentation to establish your identity and your connection to a foreign country (“foreign status”). Applicants claimed as dependents must also prove U.S. residency unless the applicant is from Canada or Mexico or the applicant is a dependent of U.S. military personnel stationed overseas"
is that asking for her status in the country living? or her connection to me? the "foreign country" throw me off!
Please help so i can get this close out on my end.
Regards,

Since a wife cannot be a dependent, only the first sentence in your citation is relevant.
It would be good to review the section titled "Supporting Documentation Requirements" beginning on page 2 of the instructions for Form W-7. Continuing on further, there is a chart of documents which shows various acceptable documentation. Any of the indicated documents should be sufficient to establish foreign status and/or identity. See the W-7 instructions and the chart at:
