I'm still confused with "Did you Support yourself". If my parent can't claim me as a dependent, does this mean I can check yes even if I live with her?

If parent can't claim me, doesn't that mean I should be able to claim myself?

There's really two issues: 1. does your parent qualify to claim you and 2. is your parent actually claiming you.

That part of the interview is to answer the first question. if you do not provide more than half your own support, you answer no to "Did you Support yourself" even if your parent does not plan to claim you. Scholarships are third party support and do not count as support you provided. Student loans do count as support you provided (unless the parent cosigned).

There is a rule that says IF somebody else CAN claim you as a dependent, you are not allowed to claim your own exemption. If you have sufficient income (usually more than $6300), you can & should still file taxes; you just doesn’t get your own $4050 exemption (deduction). In TurboTax, you indicate that somebody else can claim you as a dependent, at the personal information section.

Furthermore, a  student, under age 24, is only eligible for the refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit if he supports himself by working.

If your parents status show as non dependent and they received the EIC can you still claim yourself on your income tax
