If you are divorced by the end of 2019, you do not have a choice--you will have to file as single--or as Head of Household if you are the custodial parent. Married filing separately or jointly is not an option.
Thank you, yes - in our situation, we're headed to court next week with the intention of finalizing our divorce. My soon-to-be ex brought up this tax question and asked it I want to postpone finalizing until 2020. I don't, but wanted to try to do a little research on how hefty the impact will be. Thank you!
if you purchase the downloaded version of TT, which is available now, you can run your incomes through the software and determine whether each filing single or filing joint makes better sense in 2019. It's a small investment to determine that answer. There are a lot of things that are not yet up-to-date in the 2019 software, but unless there is something ultra complicated in your return, it's unlikely to make a material difference,
Well if I were you I would get the 2019 downloaded Deluxe version then do a couple of tests or a "What If" ...

Forms Mode lets you view and make changes to your tax forms "behind the scenes."
If you're adventurous, you can even prepare your return in Forms Mode, but we don't recommend it. You may miss obscure credits and deductions you qualify for, and you may forget to report things that will come back and haunt you later.
Forms Mode is exclusively available in the TurboTax CD/Download software. It is not available in TurboTax Online.
