Hello community,
Here is my situation: I lived in Florida for about five years. I was married and received healthcare coverage as a dependent during all that time. All beautiful.
Then, last year, December 2019 we got divorced but I was already living and working in Massachusetts since July 31, 2019. Thus, I lived half and half in both states.
My problem is that I just found out I could face a fine in MA for not having medical insurance.
Honestly, I thought it was okay because I did have coverage since January 2019 to January 2020 in Florida.
What can I do?
How can I file my taxes? I'm so lost.
Thanks a lot,
Carol

Yes, for the state you are required to have health insurance. If you did not you either have to file for an exemption or pay the penalty. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about it.
Massachusetts law requires you to have health insurance.
To avoid a state tax penalty, adults 18 or older must have what the Massachusetts considers "minimum creditable coverage (MCC)" or prove eligibility for an exemption. The rule applies even if you are not required to pay state taxes.
Check here for exemptions.
Thank you so much, I just think that's so unfair since the open enrollment at my job in MA is in May and I stared working July 31st.
I guess there isn't escape from this one. I appreciate all the help.
"I did have coverage since January 2019 to January 2020 in Florida.
What can I do?"
Answer YES to the question, were you covered by a health insurance plan.
Why are you answering NO ??
Because a CPA told me that a Florida medical insurance (Cigna) does not qualify as mandatory coverage in MA. That I need a MA health insurance (Form 1099 1095) to file taxes 2019. Very strange indeed.
That can't be correct.
Did your Florida insurance not cover you if you got sick in Oklahoma?
In any case the State mandate is sort of like the Use Tax. Nobody pays it IMO.
maybe your ex-husband received the 1095 document.
Yeah, My insurance was Cigna
Yes, thank you. I have a copy too. I think I will go ahead and file for taxes using that form.
Thank you so much,
C
