Here are some things to try. If the first bullet point works, then you're luckily finished.
- Using Explorer, look specifically in the Documents\TurboTax folder, which is the default location for the *.tax2024 data files, although one can choose to save them anywhere.
- Search your entire computer system for any file ending in *.tax2024 and also look in the Recycle Bin.
- If you have more than one Windows user account (like an Admin account and user accounts), log into each one and do those searches again within each user account. I remember a user who said his ended up on the Admin account side, so his searches in his regular user account didn't find it. If you have both types of accounts look in the Documents\TurboTax folder in each and if necessary, do a complete file search in each, including looking in the Recycle Bin.
- If you use Windows OneDrive, or other backups, also look there. I recall a user one year saying his had ended up mysteriously in OneDrive.
- In your search if you run across a file with a tilde, such as ~*.tax2024, that is a temporary file that can sometimes be helpful in recovery if the actual data file is not found.
If you find the *.tax2024 data file, make note of its location. Then launch your TurboTax program, and at the main landing page go to the top TurboTax menubar and click on FILE in the menubar's upper left corner. In the dropdown menu choose OPEN TAX RETURN, then point TurboTax to the location of the file.
