It depends. If you meet the qualifying requirements of a qualifying child or a qualifying relative, then your parents can claim you as a dependent. Below you will find the basic qualifiers:

You would be considered their qualifying child, if all the following questions are true:

  • You must be related.
  • You can’t be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • If you are married, you can’t file a joint return with your spouse.
  • You must be under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • You must have lived with them for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • You didn't provide more than half of your own support for the year.

If you don't qualify as their qualifying child, you may be considered their qualifying relative. The following questions must be true:

  • You can’t be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • If you are married, you can’t file a joint return with your  spouse.
  • You must live with them all year.
  • You can’t have made more than $5,050 in income in 2024.
  • They must provide more than half of your total support for the year.

Please review the TurboTax Help article Who can I claim as my dependent?

If your parents claim you and you file a tax return to get a refund, make sure that you indicate that someone else is claiming you as a dependent.  Refer to the TurboTax article: How do I indicate that I can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return?
