I live in Louisian but earn income in Mississippi. How do I list the income on Louisiana so I do not owe both states?

You have to file a nonresident return for Mississippi.   You owe tax to the state of MS on the income you earned while working there.   When you prepare your state returns, prepare the nonresident MS first.   TurboTax will apply a credit to your LA return for the tax you pay to MS.

Generally, you’ll need to file a nonresident state return if you made money from sources in a state you don’t live in.  Some examples are:

  • Wages or income you earned while working in that state
  • Out-of-state rental income, gambling winnings, or profits from property sales
  • S Corporation or partnership income
  • Beneficiary income from a trust or estate
  • For active duty military: non-military income earned outside your state of legal residence
  • If your employer withheld taxes for the wrong state

Use the link above for instructions on how to prepare the nonresident return.   Your resident state taxes all of your income, but they will also give you credit for taxes you pay to another state for any of the reasons above.
