I keep getting a message that I can’t file my NYS return because “some of my tax forms aren’t ready”. What does that mean? Why can’t I file?

That usually means that one of your required forms is not ready to be mailed or efiled yet. You can check the form's availability for NYS by clicking here.

Thank you @BrandiLO! I’m still a little confused though. I tried to go back in and finalize again today and I’m getting the same message but it says the form is available to file today...

Sometimes, a form is scheduled to be finalized, but is delayed.  And sometimes when the update is on time, it is actually applied in the afternoon or evening rather than the morning.  Try checking tomorrow.  

Also be aware, the IRS doesn't open e-filing until February 12, and I don't believe your state return can actually be transmitted until the IRS opens, even if the state is ready, for security reasons.  So there's not much point in rushing.
