I just tried to file an extension for 2019 taxes and turbo tax told me that "Unfortunately, the deadline for filing an extension has passed". It's March 5th!

That message was referring to a 2018 extension request.

The TurboTax Easy Extension for e-fling an extension should be available in Mid-March for 2019.

an alternative is to go to IRS website print out for 4868 fill it in and mail it. 

don't forget any state returns you need to extend.
