Turbotax Online can only prepare tax returns for the current year. It shuts down completely after October 20 to be reprogrammed for the next year, and usually open in mid-November. Only some limited information like name and dependents will carry over into the 2017 return.
If you want to use Turbotax Online, you may or may not get a marketing email. Turbotax Online is free to use to prepare a return, you pay when you are ready to file, and the fee depends on the program level you choose.
Turbotax Online and Turbotax Desktop (installed on your own computer) are different programs with different capabilities, price structures and access levels. Paying for Turbotax online does not give you the desktop program.
If you want to purchase Turbotax Desktop for 2017, you can wait until it is release or you can sign up for Turbotax Advantage. Turbotax Advantage will give you the first release of the Desktop program, usually in mid-November. You will get a digital download of the program you choose (Mac or PC; Deluxe,Premier or Home & Business) and you will get a CD in the mail as a backup copy. Turbotax Advantage is more expensive than buying the CD or download from Amazon but you do get automatic first release and you get access to priority customer service.
If you actually PAID for Turbotax Online Deluxe 2016 but you already filed your 2016 return with TxAct, you need to call customer support for a refund.
