I immigrated in March 2016 and I've had health insurance since then. Can I claim that I had insurance the full year?

If I claim that I was insured from March to December, I get a penalty even though I didn't live in the US before March. There's an option to waive that penalty by claiming I am a non-resident. But that's inconsistent with my significance presence test, according to which I am a resident alien. What is the best way to enter the health insurance info in this case?

If you were living in a Foreign Country or U.S. Possession/Territory during the year you will be allowed to claim an exemption for the months that you did not have Minimum Essential Coverage. To select this exemption please follow the steps below. Screenshots are also attached to guide you through the pages:

  1. Log into TurboTax and access your Current Tax Return
  2. From the Welcome Screen click on Federal Taxes from the main tab
  3. In the secondary tab that appears below you will click on Health Insurance
  4. The fist page will ask you Did you all have Health Insurance coverage in 2016? From the selections below you will choose I will pick who had it and what months then click continue
  5. The next page will allow you to select which months everyone on your Tax Return had Minimum Essential Coverage, you will appropriately mark these boxes.
  6. Next you will be asked to select the reason you are waived from penalty. You will scroll down to the section Wasn't required to get Insurance and select Resident of Foreign Country or U.S. Territory
  7. Click Continue and TurboTax will walk you through the rest of the process!
