If you entered your bank account on your latest tax return then the IRS has that information.

If you received notification that direct deposit of your stimulus payment was affected by the recent IRS processing error, then you can expect the IRS to make a second attempt within the next few days. It's best to first confirm the status of your stimulus payment at Get My Payment.

If you have not received your payment by January 15, 2021, AND your status remains "unavailable" at Get My Payment, then you will claim your credit when you file your 2020 tax return.

The IRS will continue send out checks and debit cards in January, if you

  • You did not use direct deposit for you most recent tax refund, or

  • You used direct deposit, but have since closed that account.

They are urging taxpayers to pay close attention to their mail during this time.

We know that this stimulus is important to you and your family and we are committed to getting you your money. You can find the most up to date information at IRS Updates on the Second Stimulus and TurboTax updates on the second stimulus.

Are you able to tell if there is a possibility that the delay in the direct deposit is due to something with Turbotax? I had no issue receiving the first stimulus via direct deposit in April and no account changes, but haven't received the second. Is there a way to get an answer without sitting on hold for 45 minutes?

Please note the following update:

We are happy to share that stimulus payments will begin to be deposited on January 8th for millions of our customers affected by the IRS error.  We expect most of these payments to be available that day, but banks could take a few business days to process. Payment will be deposited into the same bank account that customers received their 2019 tax refund.

Customers receiving a stimulus payment will receive an email from TurboTax letting them know their stimulus payment is on the way.  We have been working tirelessly with the Treasury and IRS to get stimulus payments to our customers.  We know how important these funds are for so many Americans and we regret that an IRS error caused a delay.

Please note the following page for additional information:  Why Haven’t I Received My Second Stimulus Check?

We are unable to provide specific information for a taxpayer's stimulus status in this forum, however.  In a worst-case scenario where the stimulus payment cannot be received, it would be necessary to claim it as part of the 2020 tax filing and increase the refund.  But the vast majority should be able to have their stimulus provided by direct deposit, check, or debit card.

Every effort is being made to email customers directly.  But where an email is not immediately received, it does not mean that the stimulus payment is not being processed.  It can take a couple of business days depending on bank processing.  Only in a worst-case scenario where the IRS is unable to make the direct deposit or issue a check/debit card would the taxpayer have to claim the stimulus as additional refund on the 2020 tax return.  The vast majority should receive their stimulus payment very soon.

I have received the email stating my stimulus will be deposited today. Can you tell me if all deposits will be made today, or in batches over time? And can you tell me if this is being done via wire transfer? I have not received my deposit yet.

Deposits are being sent today for the majority of affected taxpayers.  Some banks vary in regard to the time it takes to post funds received to individual accounts.

You will likely see a deposit today if all of the following are true:

  • You filed a qualifying 2019 tax return,
  • Had a refund on the 2019 tax return,
  • Used direct deposit to receive their refund, and,
  • Still have this same bank account.

If you do not see a payment either in your bank account or your mailbox by January 15, 2021 you may should claim your payment via the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return.  Please hold off filing returns until after this date to ensure that you are preparing the most accurate return possible.

If you should need to claim the credit on your tax return, you are encouraged to file early (but after January 15) to receive these funds as quickly as possible.  In TurboTax, you will enter information about the credit near the end of the interview in the Final Review section of the program.

More information about the payments and any additional updates can be found at the following links:
