Form 8862 must be present in the return with Child Tax Credit/Additional Child Tax Credit/Credit for Other Dependents Claimed Indicator checked. The e-File database indicates the taxpayer must file Form 8862 to claim Child Tax Credit or Other Dependent Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit after disallowance.

My crystal ball is broken. what seems to be the issue? you have not provided enough info for us to suggest what a solution might be.

if you claim certain credits in the past when you were not eligible the iRS requires that when you do again become eligible you must file form 8862 to claim those credits.

The message you described indicates that IRS records show that one of your credits was denied in a previous tax year.

If the IRS denies the claim you made for these credits on your tax return:

  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC)
  • Credit for Other Dependents (ODC)
  • American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC)

You may need to:

  • Pay back the claims, plus interest
  • File Form 8862 when you claim the credit again

To add form 8862:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Go to Federal Taxes.
  3. Go to Deductions and Credits.
  4. Scroll down to You and Your Family and select show more.
  5. Go to Earned Income Credit (EIC) and click revisit.
  6. Answer the questions and eventually, you'll be asked Do any of these uncommon situations apply? Answer the prompts that follow.
