Can you clarify what the locality name is? Are boxes 18 and 19 the same for both line items? Do you happen to know what the local tax(es) are for?
Both numbers in Box 18 are the same (my gross income) Box 19 has 2 different numbers (Local tax Income) and then box 20 has the same Louisville/Jeffe (locality name). I have no idea what the taxes are for and I no longer work at this company so I'm not even sure who to ask. It wouldn't accept it when i entered everything exactly as is on my W2 so i was going to just enter the box 18, add up the total of box 19, and then box 20 but I wasn't sure if this was the correct thing to do.
Louisville, Kentucky is located in Jefferson County. Jefferson County has multiple local taxing authorities. In the course of one day, a worker may move from job site to job site. Each job site may be in a different local taxing authority and the employee's wages are subject to the individual tax rates.
I have seen W-2's with lines and lines reporting local income taxes.
Are you filing a Kentucky state tax return? If so, you may sum all of the local taxes into one line. These taxes may qualify as a deductible expense on Schedule A Itemized Deductions.
Do not add or confuse the local taxes with any Kentucky income taxes withheld.
If you are filing an Indiana state tax return and you worked in Kentucky, you may be eligible for a credit for local taxes paid outside Indiana.
@JamesG1 I'm having a similar issue with my tax forms I received. I received two versions of the City or Local Wage and Tax Statement (Copy 2) on my W-2 from my company. Boxes 18 and 19 on each show different local wages and local income tax, however, Box 20 has the same Locality Name "PHILADELPHIA". How should I handle this one my taxes?
I am filing taxes in Kentucky- I did work at two different facilities in two different areas of town so, I guess that explains the difference of numbers! Since I'm filing in KY, am I able to combine those two different numbers to one since it wouldn't accept it when I entered it as is on my W2?
You lived in Kentucky, so you would have one line with your Kentucky withholding tax. That amount is listed on line 31a and 32 of the Kentucky 740 income tax return and offsets your Kentucky tax liability.
Then you have the other two lines. One line may have a J-town local tax and the other may be the Okolona local tax.
These lines should not be added into the Kentucky withholding tax. They may be added together into one line and are deductible as taxes paid on Schedule A Itemized Deductions.
Oh goodness, now I'm all kinds of confused. I have no clue what that form is, all I got was a W2. I was just trying to file my federal taxes first on here & as I was entering the amount on box 18, 19 & 20 (from my w2) on turbotax it wouldn't accept it exactly as it is with the same locality names...I guess I'm going to try and find someone locally that I can talk with because none of this makes sense & I've never had any issues filing my taxes before.
Everything that @JamesG1 said is correct, but all you needed was the last sentence ("They may be added together into one line"). The two lines with the same locality name can be combined.
