My husband been filing taxes for my daughter over seven years now I want to file for but he won't let me what can I do
Q. My husband been filing taxes for my daughter over seven years now I want to file for but he won't let me what can I do?
Is it your husband or your ex-husband? If you are a married couple, living together and filing separate returns, you can decide between you who will claim the child.* If you can't agree, it's the parent with the highest income who gets to claim the child.
Otherwise, the question has been answered above. The parent with physical custody gets to claim the child. If that's you, you just do it. If he files the child too, the IRS will sort it out.
* It may be worthwhile to prepare trial returns, both ways, to see which way the family comes out best. This tool may be useful: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/calculators/taxcaster/?s=1.
A bigger question might be: why are you not filing as Married filing Jointly?
I have a question how can I stop someone else from claiming my children on there tax return please help me with this. It's getting me upset see my mother is trying to claim them and yes I did my taxes first but that's besides the point how do I make sure she can't claim them. When I do my taxes I have this pin at the end set up but that's not goin to stop it because she tried doin her taxes today and she won't get anything back and she put my son on it. Please help me.
It's already been explained above. You can NOT stop anybody from claiming your kid. You just have to deal with the consequences afterward.
