Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Q. My husband been filing taxes for my daughter over seven years now I want to file for but he won't let me what can I do?

Is it your husband or your ex-husband?  If you are a married couple, living together and filing separate returns, you can decide between you who will claim the child.* If you can't agree, it's the parent with the highest income who gets to claim the child.

Otherwise, the question has been answered above. The parent with physical custody gets to claim the child. If that's you, you just do it.  If he files the child too, the IRS will sort it out.

* It may be worthwhile to prepare trial returns, both ways,  to see which way the family comes out best. This tool may be useful: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/calculators/taxcaster/?s=1.

A bigger question might be: why are you not filing as Married filing Jointly?
