I forgot to write the IP PIN on my paper return! Do I have to wait for that return to be rejected, or can I send the same return, with the IP PIN, right now?

I must file by paper (identity fraud a few years back).

The return won't actually be rejected, but it will be subject to additional screening/processing and any refund will be delayed.

From IRS -

If you file your federal tax return without your IRS assigned IP PIN:
  • Your electronic return will be rejected and you won't be able to e-File
  • Your paper return will be subject to additional screenings to validate your identity and will delay any refund you may be receiving.

Thanks - but would there be any harm or value in sending another copy with the IP PIN, and a note that says "whups, missed the pin first time around, here's a copy of the same return but with the PIN"? might that take our return out of the "additional screening" requirement?

It may actually cause more confusion or problems than it would solve.  There is likely a reason that an IP PIN was issued to you, so filing multiple returns would likely cause red flags and more scrutiny.  Its also fairly common for attached notes such as that to be discarded or not read by the people that process the returns.

next year, e-File. Getting an IP PIN does not stop you from e-Filing.

Make sure that when you do e-file that you include your IP-PIN next to your "SIGN HERE" section on your 1040.  It will show up there "automatically" when you add it to your return under FEDERAL TAXES / Other Tax Situations.  Thanks for the advice on "NOT" sending a New Return if you forget your pin the first time. Know one needs any extra "FLAGS" when filing your taxes …. ride out the storm or call IRS to check the status. Just make sure that your filing late ….  that you e-file before October 15th as that is the cut-off date for ALL e-filing. After that date is all PAPER again.
