This is what I see when I go through the steps at the IRS Direct Pay website. I don't use the Apple apps thing.
On the verification field it shows me a dropdown menu showing 2016-2020. It wants you to use info from a prior return to verify, and allows you to choose a tax year that you have filed in the past. Are you only seeing 2020 and don't have the choice of 2016-2019? ( I realize that none of those years apply to you as a first-time filer.)
In any case, I don't see a way around that if 2021 was your first year to file a return. It looks like Direct Pay requires a past return in order to verify, and it's not yet showing 2021 returns as a possibility in that menu, since they don't have a database for 2021 returns yet.
I also found this sentence on the Direct Pay website:
"The current tax year does not become available until after filing season is over, so you should choose a prior year as your Tax Year for Verification."
To make estimated tax payments get the Forms 1040-ES from the IRS website.
