Using Turbotax online service, I filed form 4868 Automatic Extension of Time To File US Individual Income Tax Return. No balance was due. I will receive a refund when I file my taxes. Both line 5 and line 4 were filled correctly. The taxes paid exceeded the estimated taxes owed. Line 6 should have been 0. Instead it showed my balance due to be equal to my refund. This form has told the IRS that I owe a tax payment which is due on April 18. Line 7 was left blank. Line 7 indicates the amount of taxes from line 6 that I intend to pay. So Turbo tax’s error has created a tax liability due April 18 & told the IRS that I will not pay it. Phone rep said form is not designed for extensions with refunds coming. So now I have to file on time to prove that I don’t owe the erroneous taxes due April 18. Or I could pay the erroneous taxes owed & wait for double the refund when I file after April 18. I know that the final tax filing determines my tax burden. The purpose of the extension form is to tell the IRS how much I think I owe & pay it before the April 18 deadline. I am concerned that if I ignore this error, the IRS computer will automatically generate warning notices that I did not pay what the form 4868 told them I owed. Form has already been transmitted. Phone rep says nothing can be done to fix TurboTax error. Any suggestions as to how to solve?

Any amount reported on your extension is merely an estimate and will have no consequence against your return when you file it. There is nothing more you need to do except file your return by the extended deadline of October 15.
