The energy efficient home improvement credit is for improvements to your main home, which is where you live most of the time. The home must also be located in the United States.

It is also important to note that this credit is nonrefundable, meaning that you will not receive a credit if there is no tax to offset. If this is the case, your credit will carryforward to future years.

If you qualify for the credit based on the above information, please ensure you enter your energy-saving home improvements using TurboTax Online as follows:

  1. Go to the Energy Efficient Home Improvements screen, answer Yes and Continue. Follow the instructions on the next screens.
  2. On the screen, Did you have any of these residential energy property costs in 2024?, answer Yes.
  3. Answer Yes that it is installed on or in connection to a home in the United States. Then, click Yes that you originally place it in service.
  4. Enter 2,261 in the box next to heat pumps. Click continue.
  5. Enter information on the following screens.
  6. You should see your credit on the screen, Your Home Energy Credit Summary
