When you e-file or mail a return there is an option for Direct Deposit.
You may not have elected Direct Deposit and it you don't you get mailed a check.
You should look at a copy of your returns, as you can elect Direct deposit on Federal and not the state.
The other reason people get checks is if a digit was off on the direct deposit then the bank would reject it and then it is returned and a check issues.
