I don't know why I am being charged for a free file return. I don't have state taxes but it wont let me delete the state return portion.

I looked and it said you can go to Tax Home and delete State return (nothing was entered because I don't have state tax) but there is no such ability to delete the state return.

The TurboTax Free online edition is for very simple tax returns that do not require any other form or schedule other than the Form 1040.  If your tax data requires entry on any other form or schedule then you must upgrade to the Deluxe edition or higher.

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2024 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

Go to this TurboTax website for the Free online edition - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/free-edition.jsp

I mean, thanks for sharing, but you didn't answer the question.

And for the record, having the same problem, and I DID clear and start over but nowhere along the way was I able to decline, delete or choose not to do the state forms.

The help topic swears there is a little trashcan you can click, but no. They changed the interface. No trashcan now.

Does ANYONE know how in 2025 to get rid of that State Tax Return???

@jcapps2022 See this TurboTax support FAQ for how to delete a state tax return when using the online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/delete-state-return-turbotax...

Hi Don.

Thanks, but as I said in my first post:

I just went to my online tax return and my state tax return does have a trash can symbol.

Have you paid the TurboTax account fees?  If so you cannot delete the state return.

Okay, great, but k-kreckow and I both have the new interface when we open TurboTax and there is no trashcan. It looks nothing like what the help says.  So I think you can stop trying to tell us what "should" be there, because the problem we are having is that IT IS NOT THERE with the new interface.

I have left TurboTax now. Trying Tax Slayer.

Well, this is what is presented when using my TurboTax online account with a state tax return.
