I don’t have insurance but I had medical expenses,

Enter the medical expenses that you paid out of pocket into the Medical Expenses section of your return.  TurboTax will take you through several different categories of expenses so that you know what can be considered a deduction.

Medical expenses must exceed 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) before they are deducted.  If your amount exceeds that threshold, then they will be included on Schedule A Itemized Deductions along with other items such as mortgage interest, property taxes, and charitable contributions among other things.

Use the following steps to get started entering your medical expenses:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

  • This opens a box where you can type in “medical expenses, sch a” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to medical expenses, sch a

  • Click on the blue “Jump to medical expenses, sch a” link
