This type of field it is not a calculation, it is a transfer of information from a calculated field on your Federal return. Since you have verified that line 4 of Schedule 1 is blank, it is fine to enter $0.

I am a ten plus year user of Turbo Tax. Never had such terrible experiences as this year.
I will stop recommending and helping friends who have simple questions using TT that I am able to answer after years of doing this myself. Obviously TT wants me to pay $100 just to get a simple question answered as to how to handle a blank being transferred as a blank on state taxes. Why is TT flagging this? I need to know how to fix, or why it is flagged. But cannot pay $100 to get a simple answer after Covid wiped out all my income last year as a travel consultant.

Thank you. The state is California. Schedule D-1 page 2 Line 19 is the issue TT keeps telling me to fix by entering a number. The form states to use the number from Federal 1040 Schedule Line 4, which is blank.
My question is do I just leave the CA D-a Line 19 blank because that is what is on my 1040 Schedule 1 Line 4.
I know that zero is probably not correct because 1. it doesn't match the Fed form and 2. zero indicates a calculation was made vs blank means nothing.

Thank you for taking time to respond and answering this simple question. Knowing the field in question is not a calculation so adding a zero will not change anything.
I am currently on hold, 21:15 min of holding, was quoted 5-10min to speak with someone because they were all busy. So here we continue to wait. Wait. Wait. I just want my refund for their software that I didn't end up using but was still charged for. Very slick and sneaky. Not very nice. Plus this feels like a way to get people to hang up out of frustration that feels purposeful. Anyway, I'm still waiting.... 23:33 (min on hold)....
Got to the 34:35 min mark holding and then it hung up on me. This is super frustrating. Called them back. And here we are holding again.... 3:34 min in....
